What makes Project Pioneer’s post-combustion approach to carbon capture and storage (CCS) particularly attractive is that it can be applied to industries beyond electricity, and it can be retrofitted on existing capital stock.
This is an important consideration since retrofitting is both faster and easier to implement, and has lower capital costs when compared to alternative technologies such as oxyfuel or gasification which require new, expensive base facilities.
This will become increasingly important as the number of new coal plants continues to grow – especially in the developing world – and will continue to operate for decades to come.
