Local project - Global benefits

The world’s emerging economies – including those of China and India – are heavily dependent upon coal as a fuel source for much of their power generation, and in many regions, coal is the only practical fuel source for this purpose. It’s reliable, economical and abundant.

Until recently, China alone was commissioning at least one new coal-fired power plant every five days.

By 2015, developing countries will be the greatest source of greenhouse gas emissions (figures from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency).

CCS can minimize these emissions

With billions of dollars of energy infrastructure already built (and billions more to come) carbon capture and storage (CCS) may be the only way to minimize the long-term impact these facilities will have on the environment over the course of their lifespan.

Project Pioneer will demonstrate a post-combustion, retrofit CCS process that can be attached to existing energy infrastructure. Whether in the developed or developing world, CCS has the potential to preserve the value of these investments as well as that of the fossil fuels that drive them.
