Project Pioneer will be built at the Keephills 3 power station, approximately 70 kilometres west of Edmonton, Alberta. Carbon dioxide captured at the site will be used for enhanced oil recovery opportunities in the Pembina Oil Field or transported by pipeline to a significant sequestration area.

Proposed Pipeline Route

TransAlta and the Project Pioneer partners have identified a proposed enhanced oil recovery pipeline route based on regional setting and preservation of parks, wildlife habitat, Aboriginal interests, residential communities, water bodies and existing and future industrial developments. Where possible, the route will follow existing pipeline right-of-ways and utility corridors. View route here.

Surrounding geology

Alberta has significant sequestration capacity with the potential to store 19 gigatonnes of CO2. That's enough room for 3,500 years of production. View map.
