Project Pioneer will be retrofitted onto the Keephills 3 coal-fired power plant which – when it is commissioned in 2011 – will already be one of the most advanced facilities of its kind in the world.
Producing 450 megawatts of power, Keephills 3 will use supercritical boiler technology which features higher boiler temperatures, higher pressures, and a high-efficiency steam turbine. Because less fuel is used to produce the same amount of power, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per MW are lower than a conventional coal plant.
Keephills 3 is located approximately 70 km west of Edmonton, Alberta and is jointly owned by TransAlta and Capital Power. The capital cost of the power plant alone will be approximately $1.7 billion, equally split between the two partners.
Construction of Project Pioneer will commence after Keephills 3 is commissioned.
